Daria, a cult classic from the late nineties, is finally getting the spinoff it deserves.
What We Know:
- Tracee Ellis Ross has signed on to be the voice and executive producer of Jodie, a spinoff of the classic MTV animated series Daria. Grace Nkenge Edwards, the writer and co-producer for Insecure, is the creator and head writer of the show.
- As the name suggest, Jodie will focus on Daria’s good friend Jodie Landon. Jodie was the smart and confident black female character that many girls in the nineties aspired to be like. According to a press release from MTV, the show will focus on Jodie “as she comes into her own and enters the workplace in her first post-college job in tech”. It will also have appearances by some of our other favorite characters from Lawndale High.
- Tracee is just as excited as everyone else for this new project. “With the brilliant, sweet and sarcastic black girl magic that is Jodie Landon, we will feature a diverse cast, comprised mainly of unapologetically smart and ambitious young female characters who are vulnerable and flawed and interesting and funny.”
- After the animated series Hey Monie! ended in 2003, Jodie will be the first animated series centered on a black woman in almost 20 years.
- Tracee assures that there will be “commentary about everything from gentrification to sex to tech to call-out culture”.
According to MTV Studios, this will be the first of many projects coming from the “Daria universe” and fans can’t to see what else is in store.
