Netflix acquires rights to Cyntoia Brown documentary

Netflix announced it acquired the rights to the Cyntoia Brown story on Monday.

What We Know:

  • The feature will draw from the 2011 documentary Me Facing Life: Cyntoia’s Story directed and produced by Daniel H. Birman. Birman will direct the Netflix film as well. It will tell the story of Brown’s incarceration and her fight for freedom.
  • Cyntoia Brown was only 16 in 2004 when she was arrested and charged for the murder of 43-year-old Johnny Allen, a man who paid to have sex with her. Brown was tried as an adult and sentenced to life in prison.
  • Earlier this year, former Tennessee Gov. Bill Haslam granted Brown clemency and commuted her sentence. She is expected to be released from prison next month.
  • Brown’s case gained national attention and prompted pleas of clemency from celebrities like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian West and Ashley Judd.
  • The documentary has not been named yet but it will follow Brown until her August release, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
