On Tuesday, May, 28th, Lee Daniels announced that he is shopping for new networks for Star.
What We Know:
- At the beginning of May, Fox announced that they would not be renewing Star for a fourth season. This comes a couple months after Disney acquired 20th Century Fox and its assets. It was rumored that the show was cancelled due to poor ratings.
- Star is considered a spinoff of the hit Fox show Empire. It followed the journey of three young, female singers trying to make it in the music industry. Despite the rumors, the show did have stable ratings. Fans even petitioned for the show to be brought back after it was cancelled.
- Lee Daniels was the co-creator of the Fox drama. Daniels has advised that he has been shopping around for a new network. He posted a clip from Star on his Instagram with the caption, “Fighting guys! Will know this week…or top of next. I’m NOT letting them STOP the Culture. SORRY!” BET and OWN are among the potential buyers for the show.
- Charlie Collier, Fox Entertainment CEO, commented on the cancellation. He admitted that it was a tough decision to make. He also advised that Fox had its focus elsewhere. The network wanted to focus on Empire’s final season, premiering Fall 2019. Fox also has to new dramas premiering soon, Prodigal Son and Not Just Me.
