Filmmaker Ava DuVernay is reportedly developing an adaptation of DC Comics’ Naomi, according to Deadline. Arrow writer and co-executive producer Jill Blankenship will also join the television project as writer and executive producer.
What We Know:
- The show follows the journey of a young, Black girl named Naomi McDuffie from her small town in the northwest to the depths of the multiverse. After her town is devastated by a supernatural event, Naomi is left to discover its origin. On her journey, she uncovers hidden secrets “that will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.”
- The new show is based on a comic book series that debuted in 2019, co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and illustrated by artist Jamal Campbell. The original comic series was called Naomi #1, according to Fandom. It will be produced by DuVernay’s Array Filmworks in association with Warner Bros Television.
- DuVernay shared her excitement for the project on Twitter in a tweet thanking DC Comics for “believing in the vision.” She also added that the new series is the third DC project to be produced by her company, Array. To the post, DC Comics responded, “We can’t wait to see these stories come to life.” DuVernay is also set to direct the feature film adaptation of DC’s New Gods.

- While Naomi is the latest show being debuted by DC, the Warner Bros. subsidiary is also developing a Black Lightning spinoff, Painkiller, as well as an adaptation of Wonder Girl, based on the DC characters created by Joëlle Jones, and with Queen of the South executive producers Dailyn Rodriguez and Greg Berlanti.
Two years ago, DuVernay made history after becoming the first Black female director to oversee a $100 million budget film when producing the adaptation of A Wrinkle In Time. She continues her hard work as she currently works on Queen Sugar and Cherish The Day on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN).
