California parents are demanding an after school program keep a closer eye on students after their 5-year-old walked almost 3 miles home from school last week.
What We Know:
- Jackson Kirby’s first day of kindergarten at Fairview Elementary School in Hayward, the little boy took a long trek home alone when the program mistakenly failed to pick him up, reports KTVU.
- His mother, Duana Kirby, said she was astounded when she got a call from her son saying he was back home from school.
- The boy apparently left his classroom and went to the bathroom around 12:20 p.m. when school ended.
- During that time, an instructor from his program, the Youth Enrichment Program, came by to pick up Jackson. When he wasn’t there, the instructor left and took the other students to the on-campus after school program. Jackson’s teacher was told he had been picked up.
- Jackson returned from the restroom to an empty classroom he didn’t know what to do so he decided to use landmarks and walk along busy streets to his house.
- The Hayward Unified School District released a statement saying:
We take this incident very seriously and are investigating to determine what steps need to be taken to ensure that this does not happen again.
This is a very disturbing story.
