John Legend, First African American Male to become EGOT

John Legend has joined the exclusive club of becoming an EGOT. That means he’s earned an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony. This makes him the first African American male to earn this elusive and hard to reach accomplishment.

What We Know:

  • Legend earned this last award, his Emmy, for his executive producer role for Jesus Christ Superstar Live
  • Legend has a total of 10 GRAMMYs, including Best New Artist and Best R&B Album.
  • His Oscar was won for Best Original Song in 2015 for Selma’s “Glory,” the hit collar with Common
  • Legend’s Tony Award was in 2017 as the co-producer of Jitney, which won for Best Revival of a Play.
  • Whoopi Goldberg is the only other African American EGOT in the small group of 15 EGOT honorees. (yes you read that correctly)
