Johnson & Johnson has recalled 33,000 bottles of baby powder after the Food & Drug Administration discovered traces of asbestos, a carcinogen, in the product.
What We Know:
- For years, Johnson & Johnson has insisted that their products are indeed safe to use, but the company has found themselves on the wrong side of thousands of lawsuits which argue the safety of their products.
- The recall has caused the company to pull its baby powder off of the shelves for the first time. Walmart, CVS and Rite-Aid are among the numerous stores that are pulling the product off the shelves due to the sub-traces being found.

- According to Reuters, 13 days prior to the FDA releasing their findings, Johnson & Johnson CEO Alex Gorsky said “We unequivocally believe that our talc and our baby powder does not contain asbestos.” The comment was made during a October 3 disposition, involving a Indiana law professor who alleges his cancer was caused by the powder.
- Although, Reuters reported that previous FDA tests of Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder did not find asbestos, this current discovery of asbestos and other allegations do not help the validity of the company’s brand.
- A representative for the company told Forbes that they are working with the FDA to “determine the integrity of the tested sample and the validity of the test results.”
According to a spokesman for Johnson & Johnson, the recall is “out of an abundance of caution”.
