Singer Rihanna has confirmed that she declined an invitation to be a half time show headliner.
- In an interview for Vogue‘s November cover story, Rihanna confirmed rumors that she turned down the NFL’s offer to headline the Super Bowl. She has been vocal about her support former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.
- The rumor that she declined the 2019 Super Bowl started in October of last year.
- She was asked if Kaepernick was the reason she declined the offer and she said “Absolutely.” She says “I couldn’t dare do that. For what? Who gains from that? Not my people. I just couldn’t be a sellout. I couldn’t be an enabler. There’s things within that organization that I do not agree with at all, and I was not about to go and be of service to them in any way.”
- She is signed to the record label Roc Nation which is Jay Z‘s entertainment and sports company. Many people have disapproved of his recent endeavor of teaming up with the NFL to consult on live events, including the Super Bowl halftime show.
Despite Rihanna turning the opportunity down, singers Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will be the headlining acts for the halftime show next year on Feb. 2, 2020, in Miami, Florida.
