In 2017, while attending a McDowell’s pop up in California, actress Shari Headley was unsure of casting plans. Fast forward to 2019, it has now been confirmed that she will reprise her role as Prince Akeem’s bride in the Coming to America Sequel.
What We Know:
- Shari Headley (55) of Queens, NY, is mostly known for her role as Lisa McDowell in the classic black film Coming to America.
- Coming to America made its debut in theaters in June 1988 and grossed nearly $300 million according to the worldwide box office.
- The film consisted of a star-studded cast, including Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, James Earl Jones, John Amos, Samuel L. Jackson, Vanessa Bell Calloway, and Cuba Gooding Jr. Even Paula Abdul did the choreography for the wedding scene.
- According to Essence, the plot of the sequel will follow Prince Akeem, who is set to become King of Zamunda, as he discovers that he has a son in America. He and Semmi (Arsenio Hall) return to America to honor the king’s dying wish and groom this son as the crowned prince.
- Eddie Murphy, Arsenio Hall, and James Earl Jones have all confirmed their return in the sequel.
- Wesley Snipes, Rapper Rick Ross, and Tracy Morgan are also going to be joining the cast. It will be interesting to see what dynamic, if any, they add to this classic film.

According to Paramount Studios, the sequel is set to debut in theaters in August 2020.
