California highway Patrol Officer Killed In Highway Shooting Leaving One Commuter Injured

A California highway patrol officer was killed and two others were injured during a traffic stop on Monday evening in Riverside California.

What We Know:

  • On Monday, Aaron Luther was pulled over for a traffic stop around 5:30pm near Interstate 215 in Riverside. Luther is a convicted felon who had riffles and hand guns in his possession. His white GMC pickup truck caused officers to make a quick traffic stop and impound the vehicle.
  • An officer was filling out paperwork for Luther’s impoundment when Luther pulled out a rifle and shot the officer. The officer called for backup and several other police officers arrived at the scene and killed Luther.
  • The first officer who was shot, Andre Moye, was flown to a nearby hospital where he later died.
  • Luther shot two more highway patrol officers. The fourth officer was able to fatally shoot him.
  • According to Nytimes, “Luther has an extensive criminal record that included a conviction for attempted murder in the 1990’s.” He also spent 10 years in prison for attempted murder after serving time for an assault with a deadly weapon on a police officer.

Chief Diaz of Riverside Police Department said he was unsure of Luther’s motive for this crime.
