St. Louis couple, Mark and Patricia McCloskey have continued to make headlines after an image taken of them went viral. Now, the McCloskey’s are filing a lawsuit against the news photographer who took the infamous photo.
What We Know:
- The image was taken back in June during the height of protests across the country in support of Black Lives Matter. The photo showed Mark McCloskey with an AR-15 rifle and Patricia McCloskey with a handgun pointed at Black Lives Matter protestors who were marching near their $1.15 million St. Louis home. The protestors were headed to the home of St. Louis Mayor, Lyda Krewson.
- According to USA Today, the couple filed the lawsuit last Friday at the St. Louis Circuit Court against United Press International photographer, Bill Greenblatt, claiming that the photo was taken on private property without consent.
- The suit also targets online merchandising websites, alleging that their image and likeness are being used for profit on websites like Redbubble, adding to their national recognition and causing “humiliation, mental anguish, and severe emotional distress”.
- This is not the only legal battle the McCloskeys have faced as a result of the incident. In a previous case, the couple pleaded not guilty to unlawful use of a weapon and evidence tampering. Despite their claims of fearing for their lives, they are also being accused of fourth-degree assault. This case is still ongoing.
The photo has fueled a national debate on the right to bear arms, gun safety, and the risks involved with protesting in America. It’s unclear if the McCloskeys will win their case, but despite their best efforts, it seems this image has left a lasting impression.
