Country rapper Lil Nas X had one of the most unforgettable Halloween costumes of 2020. Even though it caught some people off guard, there were some who didn’t appreciate his costume this year.
What We Know:
- Lil Nas X posted his Halloween costume on Instagram and it was a surprise to many fans and followers. According to Uproxx, he kept both his sexual orientation and his love for Nicki Minaj under wraps because of latent homophobia in the rap world.
- There was plenty of backlash and homophobic hate from rappers such as Dave East and 50 Cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson III. Aside from that, there were some who celebrated him like Andy Cohen, Iggy Azalea, and Doja Cat.
- 50 Cent had something to say after Nas X posted his photos on his Instagram page. 50 Cent went on to post the images on his Twitter account and say “What the f**k. Nikki (sic) come get him!! lol.” Lil Nas X, went on to respond to his statement with “why you in barb business”?
- Dave East, another celebrity who participated in the comments on the costume, also posted something on his Instagram story. According to Uproxx, he wrote, “And y’all was mad at me about this *****”. He then went on to use a homophobic slur “Bati mon, bun up!” This is a term used for gay men in the Caribbean and in Jamaica.
- Lil Nas X wasn’t phased by many of these comments because he knows how to clap back and doesn’t bother anyone in the industry as he stated in a tweet.
bro i don’t bother a soul in this industry. all i do is tweet and make bangers. leave me alone damn.

- It’s clear that there are people paying attention to him, such as 50 Cent and Dave East, but most important, Nicki Minaj praised him. She included his costume in her “Halloqueen” roundup along with Ciara’s 2011 leopard red carpet look found on HotNewHipHop.
Even though there was plenty of comments on social media, Lil Nas X was able to overcome them. Confidentially and efficiently, he shut the haters down.
