ABC Developing ‘Black-ish’ Spinoff, ‘Old-ish’

ABC is developing a new Black-ish spinoff called Old-ish starring Laurence Fishburne and Jenifer Lewis.

What We Know:

  • ABC is bringing another “Ish” to the network with the development of Old-ish, the third spinoff from the mother series Black-ish, written by Kenya Barris. Black-ish focused on the Johnson family as a whole, Grown-ish zoomed in on the life of Zoey Johnson (Yara Shahidi) as a young adult in college, and Mixed-ish focused on the mother on the mothership series, Rainbow Johnson (Tracee Ellis Ross) and her life being biracial. And now there’s Old-ish, which is about Dre Johnson’s parents, Ruby (Jenifer Lewis) and Earl (Laurence Fishburne).
  • In the new series, Ruby and Earl are giving their marriage another go and move to a nice neighborhood in Los Angeles. Viewers will see some old and new faces in the show and it is with no doubt that the series will be hilarious. Along with Barris, Fishburne, Helen Sugland via Cinema Gypsy, E. Brian Dobbins, and Anthony Anderson will be executive producers on the show and Lewis will serve as a producer. ABC Signature will be the studio where they will film.
  • While Black-ish and Mixed-ish are on ABC, Grown-ish was thought to be too young to be on ABC and was picked up by Disney’s young adult network, Freeform. Black-ish is heading towards its seventh season, Mixed-ish is returning for its second season sometime in the 2020-21 season, and Grown-ish is in the works of its fourth season in 2021.
  • Although Barris is working on his Netflix projects like Black AF, his deal with Netflix allows him to stay involved with the “Ish” franchise and he will be penning the scribe for Old-ish.

The series is in the works but there is no more information regarding the air date for the new series or the specifics on who the other cast members are.
