Criminal justice reform advocate Alice Marie Johnson will be speaking at the Republican National Convention.
What We Know:
- America heard the story of Alice Marie Johnson during President Donald Trump’s $10 million Super Bowl commercial, where it was learned that Trump granted Johnson leniency by commuting her sentence.
- Before the clemency, Johnson was serving a life sentence on nonviolent drug and money laundering charges. Reality television star Kim Kardashian West, who is an advocate for criminal justice reform, pushed for justice for Johnson and spoke to Trump at the White House. Trump commuted her sentence and she was released from the Aliceville Federal Correctional Institution in 2018 after serving 21 years in prison.
- This week, Johnson will be speaking at the Republican National Convention to share her story. “I’ll be there talking about criminal justice reform, that is my main mission,” she said. “I’m there because I’ve been affected by our criminal justice system, and that’s my mission.”
- Johnson also attended the 2019 State of the Union address where Trump discussed a bipartisan criminal justice reform bill and, according to Johnson, this is something she promised the women that were in prison with her.
- The RNC kicked off on Monday where GOP Senators, Donald Trump Jr., Andrew Pollack, Mark and Patricia McCloskey, and many others spoke. A lot of the speeches on the first night targeted Democrats and Joe Biden and how U.S. citizens would lose America under Democratic ruling.
- For night 2 of the RNC, the speakers include First Lady Melania Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Eric Trump, Tiffany Trump, Sen. Rand Paul, Gov. Kim Reynolds, Mary Ann Mendoza, Pam Bondi, Daniel Cameron, and Jeanette Nunez.
The theme for the first night of the RNC was the “Land of Promise” and Tuesday night’s theme is “Land of Opportunity.” Viewers can watch on ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, CNN, YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, Twitter, and Amazon Prime.
