A 19-year-old Muslim woman from Minnesota has filed discrimination charges after a Starbucks artist wrote ‘ISIS’ on her cup inside a Target in St. Paul.
What We Know:
- The woman identified by CNN only as Aishah told the network that went she went to tell the employee her name, the barista had already written on the cup before she had the chance to finish. When she had received her drink the name ‘ISIS‘ appeared on her cup which correlates to the Islamic State terrorist group.
- ISIS has been a long-feared terrorist group that implemented a society that mirrors the region’s ancient pasts. However, their efforts to convert the people have resulted in the killing dozens of people and carried out through public executions.
- Twitter users have called current customers to boycott Starbucks due to the discrimination and lack of support to Aishah.

- When asked about the situation and how she felt the moment she saw ‘ISIS’ written on her cup, Aishah stated the following:
“I felt belittled and so humiliated. This is a word that shatters the Muslim reputation all over the world. I cannot believe that in this day and age, something like this can be considered acceptable. It isn’t OK.”
- According to reports, the employee has since claimed she did not hear her name. However, Aishah reported to CNN that there was “absolutely no way” they could have made a mistake after repeating her name several times.
- Target has responded to the experience Aishah had to endure and labeling it as an “unfortunate mistake”. Aishah reported that she was given only a $25 Starbucks gift card and a new drink, but was escorted out of the store by security officers.
Since the discriminatory act, Aishah is now being represented by the Minnesota chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MN) who has filed charges on July 6 that state that the discrimination acts are a violation of the Minnesota Human Rights Act and have demanded that all the Starbucks employees be fired and to provide additional training.
