Hundreds of families in California have been forced to evacuate due to large wildfires burning across the state.
What We Know:
- The Kincade Fire began late Wednesday in Sonoma County and has grown to 74,324 acres with only 15 percent contained. The blaze has so far destroyed 123 structures of which 57 are residential homes. Currently, about 90,000 structures remain threatened by the fire.
- California Fire Department says that additional evacuation warnings were in effect on the eastern side of Sonoma County and the west side of Lake County due to the blaze.
- Winds are forecasted to reach up to 20 to 30 mph before peaking Tuesday night with gusts up to 50 mph. The Pacific Gas & Electric Corporation said its next blackout will start early Tuesday, October 30, 2019, and will affect about 1.5 million people in 29 Northern California counties.
- In Southern California, fire crews are battling the Getty Fire in the upscale communities in the hills above Los Angeles. The fire roared up a steep hillside near the J. Paul Getty Museum. It destroyed at least eight homes and damaged at least six, forcing LeBron James and thousands of others to flee.
- Nearly 156,000 people have been ordered to evacuate because of the wildfires, most of them because of the Kincade Fire. Evacuation orders were downgraded to warnings for around 30,000 people in the West but new warnings were issued to people in the East.
Two firefighters were injured Sunday while battling the fires. One firefighter sustained serious burn injuries and was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center while the other firefighter had minor injuries.
