San Antonio native and wife to the recently deceased Rep. Elijah Cummings, Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings, is expected to run for his available Senate seat.
What We Know:
- Maya Rockeymoore-Cummings was not only the wife of Maryland Senate Representative Elijah Cummings but, also a chairwoman of the Maryland Democratic Party. Although it is expected that she will take her husband’s place, Fox News reports that she has not made any plans on if she will do so.
- Rep. Elijah Cummings passed away Thursday, October 17, due to complications of an illness. It’s not a secret that Rep. Cummings was battling with his health. Before his death, he was hospitalized in 2018. Rockeymoore was running for governor of Maryland at the time but, dropped out of the race to take care of her husband.
- Rockeymoore earned a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Prairie View A&M University, as well as, a master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy certificate from Purdue University. She recently worked for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation and she served as chief of staff to former United States Representative Charles Rangel.
- While earning her master’s degree in 1996, she was elected in Maryland’s 7th Congressional District and she was also a staffer on the House Ways and Means Committee. It sounds like she’s more than qualified for the position, right? Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has a week to schedule an election for the late Cummings seat, but he has no control over when the actual election will take place. The Baltimore Sun states that the election could be as early as February 2020 or more than a year from now.
- Rockeymoore and Cummings married each other in 2008 and had enjoyed eleven years of marriage before his sudden death. Rockeymoore has three children from previous relationships and is the stepmother to Cummings’ two daughters and son.
