Prince’s estate released a statement via Twitter saying that the estate will never permit President Trump to use Prince’s songs.
What We Know:
- The Twitter post included the letter President Trump’s lawyer Megan Newton wrote last year stating he won’t use the artist songs. According to Prince’s estate, Newton note stated that “without admitting liability, and to avoid any future dispute; we write to confirm that the Campaign will not use Prince’s music in connection with its activities going forward”.
- Prince isn’t the only artist that President Trump has crossed. Other artists include Aerosmith, Queen, R.E.M., and Pharrell.
- Pharrell Williams wrote a cease and desist letter to President Trump after he played his 2014 hit song “Happy” at a political event. This was just hours after the shooting at the Pittsburgh synagogue in October 2018.
President Trump isn’t the only president who has been turned down by musicians. Former President Ronald Regan and former GOP presidential nominee Bob Dole co-opted “Born In The USA” by Bruce Springsteen, forcing him to push it back.
