Uno by Mattel Releases Its’ First Braille Deck

Posted on October 3, 2019October 4, 2019 by Jessica D. Bullock, DI

Uno, a card game that can be played with multiple friends at a time, has been around for quite awhile, yet there has never been a braille version so that blind and visual-impaired people may be able play along also. Today, Mattel announced that fans of the game can now buy UNO Braille.

What We Know:

  • “The fact that a blind person is now able to play a classic game of UNO straight out of the box with both blind and sighted friends or family members is a truly meaningful moment for our community,” Mark Riccobono, President of the National Federation of the Blind, said in a news release.
  • Uno released a heart-touching video on Twitter that included blind and low-vision individuals enjoying the game.

  • Braille is on the corner of each card in the 112-card deck, to identify the card’s color and number action, according to a Mattel press release. It is written on the packaging as well.
  • Players can download instructions on how to play at UNOBraille.com. Both readable and audio instructions are available.
  • This isn’t UNO’s first attempt at making its game more accessible to all. It also released a version of the cards that are “optimized for the color blind” in 2017.

The card game is exclusively available on Target.com. As of now, there is only a “preorder” option for the cards to be shipped on or shortly after October 6.
