It’s been six decades since Motown Records emerged and Berry Gordy is officially closing that chapter of his life to enjoy retirement.

- Berry Gordy Jr. founded Motown Records, which Universal Music Group now owns, on January 12, 1959. Motown has been a part of musical history and integrated culture for years by celebrating the beauty of soul, R&B and pop music. Gordy wrote and produced plenty of the world’s most popular hits as a teen and throughout his adulthood. He dedicated his passion for music into the development of Motown Records at 30 years old.
- Gordy has produced records for many musical icons including Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, The Jackson 5 and Etta James. It’s clear that he’s had a long successful career and has been a great contributor to the entertainment industry.
- On Sunday, Sept. 22 Gordy announced his retirement during the Hitsville Honors event in Detroit. The very city where his entire journey into developing Motown Records began. They presented him with the Motown Legacy Award in celebration of Motown’s 60th anniversary.
- “As I stand here, I’m back where I started. I have come full circle, so it is only appropriate that I should announce my retirement,” Gordy told the audience during his acceptance speech. He also expressed his gratitude for being back in his hometown and what his love for Motown truly means to him despite selling the company in 1988.
- “The Motown legacy remains the music we made for all people that reminds us that we are all the same, that music has no color. It gives voice to honest feelings and helps us to understand each other,” Gordy said. Although his speech lasted over 30 minutes, the audience responded with laughter along with a standing ovation in celebration of Motown Records and Gordy.
- As Gordy embarks on his retirement journey at the glorious age of 89 years old, music fans will forever cherish his legacy. The Making of Motown Records Soundtrack is now available for fans to enjoy.
