With about $23 trillion in debt, the United States government shows once again how effective they are at running things. This new case is on a Homestead facility for unaccompanied minors.
What We Know:
- There has been nobody housed at the facility since August 3 when the last child left. Despite this, the government has spent close to $33 million in taxpayer money on it, according to CBS.
- During a congressional testimony with Jonathan Hayes (Director of the Office of Refugee Resettlement), it was revealed how Homestead remains staffed with about a $600 cost to maintain each day even though ther are no minors there.
- Wisconsin Democratic Representative Mark Pocan asked, “So $600 a day for 1,200 invisible, imaginary, nonexistent human beings at Homestead right now?” Hayes replied, “It’s the beds, but yes sir.”
- According to Hayes, the facility if kept staffed to accomdate a sudden influx of migrant children with no guardians.
- At the hearing, there was also a conversation regarding reports that found insufficient mental health care was given to migrant children in government custody.
Currently, there are about 5,700 children in custody without guardians. This is down from 16,000 in December 2018.
