BB&T Bank Mistakenly Deposited $120k In Account, Couple Spends It

A Pennsylvania couple is accused of theft after going on a shopping spree with $120,000 that was mistakenly deposited into their bank account.

What We Know:

  • Tiffany Williams, 35, and Husband, Robert Williams 36, appeared in court on Tuesday after they were arrested on charges of theft and receiving stolen property.
  • The Williams’ spend two and a half weeks blowing through most go their accidental windfall on expenses such as cars, bills and a camper, according to NYPost.
  • The BB&T banker deposited the dough into the couple’s account on May 31 and by June 19, the pair had spent six figures on purchases that included an SUV, two four-wheelers, a car trailer and had given $15,000 to friends.
  • On June 20, BB&T contacted Mrs. Williams about the mistake, notifying her that the money had been taken out of the account that resulted in a $107,416 overdraft fee.  She told the bank she would speak to her husband to create a repayment plan but later disappeared.

Mr. Williams admitted to investigators in late July that he and his wife had known the mislaid money did not belong to them but they spent it anyway.
