Deangelo Parnell was charged with nine counts of attempted murder after he fired several shots into the crowd at a high school football game in Mobile, AL.
What We Know:
- The 17-year-old fired shots into the crowd at Ladd-Peebles Stadium while LeFlore High School and Williamson High School were facing off on the field. The suspected shooter is a student at LeFlore High School.
- The suspect turned himself in to Mobile police on Saturday morning. Surveillance video showed Parnell firing shots into the crowd, he is currently the only suspect. CBS 17 reported that Parnell injured nine people ranging in age from 15-47.
- Fortunately, none of the injured individuals died. ABC News reported that one person had a seizure and another suffered an injured hand while fleeing the stadium.
- The shooting is believed to have stemmed from a disagreement Parnell had with another attendee that turned violent. Mobile Police Chief Lawrence Battiste released a statement saying the shooting “may have been a directed threat at one or two individuals and other people just happened to fall prey to their carelessness.”
- Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson responded to the shooting on Twitter. “Today as we cover our City in prayer for the victims injured, I would like to thank our public safety teams for their rapid response to the senseless act of violence at Ladd Stadium,” she wrote. She continued, “Our children and their families deserve to enjoy a high school football game or any public event without the thought of gun violence.”
- Authorities are still investigating the incident.
