Governor Pritzker signed a bill into law that ensures the contributions of LGBTQ people are taught in public schools, according to CNN.
What We Know:
- Starting next year, Illinois public schools will be required by law to include LGBTQ history in their curriculums.
- Learning the roles and history of lesbians, gays, bisexual and transgender people of this country has become so imperative in today’s society.
- State Senator Heather Stean stated that “One of the best ways to overcome intolerance is though education and exposure to different people and viewpoints.”
- The bill passed the Senate and House eariler this year and is scheduled to go into effect in July 2020.
- According to the bill it also states, “All textbooks must include the roles and contributions of all people protected under the Human Rights Act and must be non-discriminatory to any of the characteristics under the Act.”
The community and people of LGBTQ are proud that students and anyone who is willing to learn is able to understand the history and viewpoint of the LGBTQ community.
