The purpose of this event is to reclaim the community’s favorite spot to hang out with family and friends.
What We Know:
- According to the Huffington Post, the block party is called Gem City Shine. It will honor the nine people who lost their lives, and the many injured in the August 4th shooting.
- Chapelle, a resident of Yellow Springs 20 miles from Dayton, will host the free event and encourage those who attend to “live in the moment” and not record on their cell phones.
- Guests who attend will have the opportunity to donate to the Dayton Foundation’s Oregon District tragedy fund and the district’s business association.
- On Wednesday, Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley celebrated the announcement on Twitter by expressing how excited she was for the event.

Chapelle isn’t the only the Ohio native who came to support the victims. John Legend visited the Oregon District communities and met with local businesses the following week. He then held an intimate concert for the victim’s families.
