Danai Gurira Confirms Her Last Season Of “The Walking Dead”

Danai Gurira, who plays the katana-slashing badass Michonne on The Walking Dead, announced Friday at Comic-Con that the upcoming season will be her last.

What We Know:

  • The exit was predicted by several outlets back in February, but this is the first time that Gurira has confirmed the news.
  • Playing the character since season 3 of the AMC show, Gurira stated that the role was “one of the purest joys in my life,” and that the decision to leave the show was a difficult one.
  • “I am very very thankful for the experience I’ve had in ways that I can’t even express right now,” she continued. “My heart does not leave … it doesn’t ever end, the connection between us never ends. It was a very difficult decision. It was about my calling and other things I feel called to… as a creator of work. All I’m filled with is a lot of pain about leaving and a lot of gratitude and to all of you. I love you guys. TWD family is forever.”
  • Her character is seen destroying zombies one last time in the season 10 trailer that dropped on Friday.
  • Along with her departure, the show announced other future projects to be released, including the spinoff Walking Dead movie that AMC announced last November that will include fan-favorite Andrew Lincoln (aka Rick Grimes), who left season 9 of the show. They also announced that the movie will be released in theaters.

It’s so hard to say goodbye.
