About a dozen Christian, Jewish and clergy from other religions gathered to bless Whole Woman’s Health of Austin, its workers and its patients.
What We Know:
- One of the participating clergies was Reverend Amelia Fulbright, a campus minister in Austin and founder of Labyrinth Progressive Student Ministry. In regards to the gathering, Fulbright stated “the first and foremost goal was to say that we support you and the work that you’re doing, especially in a state where you’re constantly having to meet new regulations or deal with critics and protesters.”
- Fulbright is working to offer a different version of the Christianity others may know – the religion that says you must be anti-abortion.
- “For me, in particular as a Christian minister, I feel like it’s important to offer a different narrative…As clergy, we have the privilege of counseling people at really vulnerable moments in their lives…I want people to know that there are clergy who are safe people to talk to so that they don’t have to navigate those choices alone” she stated.
- The ceremony, including a prayer walk through the center, was a way to bring positivity to a place that the current administration is trying to destroy.
- Texas’ House of Representatives considered a bill that would have criminalized abortions and made it possible for women and doctors who participate in the procedure to receive the death penalty in April. Even though the bill failed, Texas still has very strict requirements for patients, including Texas law forbidding insurers from covering abortion unless the procedure is required to prevent death or serious physical injury.
- After residing in the area for 16 years, the clinic had to move to the northwest side of Austin in February after its building was bought out and turned into a crisis pregnancy center. Often these crisis pregnancy centers are faith-based and attempt to convince women to not have the abortion they are in need of.
