The Lion King Remake reviews are in… They’re not so good

According to film reviews, Disney’s latest remake, The Lion King, is not so great.

What We Know:

  • “Joyless, artless, and maybe soulless, it transforms one of the most striking titles from the Mouse House vault into a very expensive, star-studded Disney Nature film,” A.A. Dowd from AV Club wrote.
  • A Forbes review says,” It may be worth seeing once for the visuals, but its redundancy and inferiority has rendered it artistically irrelevant.”
  • Ahead of its national release, the film is receiving heavy criticism. This is unexpected as the story is a classic and features an all-star cast including Beyoncé, Donald Glover and James Earl Jones.
  • The film currently has a 5.2/10 rating on IMDb and a 60% on Rotten Tomatoes. This is terrible compared to the critically-acclaimed original which won two Oscars and boasts an 8.5/10 rating on IMDb and a 93% on Rotten Tomatoes.
  • These ratings are mostly from film critics. There are some user reviews available on IMDb and those are very mixed, the film has recieved nearly the same amount of 10-star ratings as 1-star ratings.
  • A common complaint of the movie is that it is “flat.” People were expecting a new take on the film, and apparently, the movie does little to deviate from the original.
  • Beyoncé was praised for her vocal performances and many critics were impressed with the live-action visuals, but it wasn’t enough to save the film from bad reviews.

  • The film was released in Hollywood on July 9. It will premiere in theaters around the nation on July 19.
