Rapper August Alsina had to cancel his appearance at the 2019 Essence Festival because he had lost mobility in his legs landing him in the hospital on Monday, July 8.

- Alsina posted to Instagram Monday explaining to his fans he had missed the New Orleans festival due to his hospitalization, another flare-up of his autoimmune disease which he has battled with his entire life.

- Alsina first opened about his autoimmune disease in 2017 in a series of Instagram posts featuring a sit-down interview with Jada Pinkett Smith. While the series mainly focuses on his liver disease, he also took the opportunity to open up to his fans about his personal history and family.

- The video series focuses largely on when Alsina passed out and fell off the stage during a 2014 concert in Manhattan. At the time, news outlets reported the cause of his collapse was “unknown,” he has since attributed the fall to his liver disease.
