A Mississippi man, who was wrongfully convicted, spent 12 years in prison and a year after release has been fatally shot.
What We Know:
- 44-year-old Cedric Willis was killed Monday on a city street. Jackson Police said, “no arrest has been made as of now and no motive is known. The shooting remains under investigation.”
- In 1994, Willis was wrongfully convicted of two robberies in Jackson. One included a rape and the other a death.
- Willis was found not guilty of the rape charge but convicted in 1997 of murder and robbery. He was sentenced to life plus 90 years.
- In 2004, Willis’ case was reopened by the Innocence Project New Orleans and he was awarded a new trial in 2005. The judge dismissed his murder and robbery case and he was released in 2006.
- Since his release, the NAACP has helped him as well as a United Methodist church. Before his death Willis said, “Each day since my release I’ve gone outside and thanked God for the sunshine.”
