Tuskegee Airman who flew 142 WWII Combat Missions dies at 99.

What We Know:

  • Lieutenant Colonel Robert Friend served in the US Air Force for 28 years. He was one of the last surviving members of the famous Tuskegee Airmen.
  • The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of black pilots who had to fight racial prejudice within the military in addition to foreign enemies abroad.
  • He trained at the prestigious Alabama Tuskegee Institute and fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars.
  • Friend’s daughter told KCBS he died from sepsis in a hospital in California.

Friend’s memorial service will be on the weekend of July 4. He will receive full military honors.
