Meek Mill wins ‘leaked audio’ lawsuit filed by attorney Charles Peruto Jr.
What We Know:
- In the summer of 2018, attorney Charles Peruto Jr. filed a lawsuit against Roc Nation and Amazon for violating the Wiretap Act. The Wiretap Act is a federal law aimed at protecting privacy in communications with other people. Peruto’s lawsuit was filed on the claims that he revealed information off the record, but he was recorded anyway.
- In May of 2018, Peruto agreed to an interview for the developing docuseries “#FreeMeek”. The docuseries shows the rapper’s rise to fame and his ten year battle with the justice system. During the interview, Peruto began making concerning remarks about his client, Judge Genece Brinkley. Brinkley recently gave Meek Mill a two to four year prison sentence for violating his probation.
- After the interview, the camera was turned off but Peruto’s comments were caught on a ‘hot mic’. In the comments he explained how defending Brinkley was becoming difficult. “Why doesn’t she just grant this f*cking thing?” he said.
- U.S District Court Judge Gerald McHugh ruled in the favor of Amazon and Roc Nation on Wednesday. McHugh wrote, “This case arises out of a ‘hot mic’ situation where an attorney made candid and embarrassing comments about his client without realizing that he was still being recorded.” Being that Peruto never asked them to stop recording, and made a conscious decision to speak on his client, his claim held no value.
According to Judge McHugh, Peruto, unfortunately, is reaping the consequences of his actions. #FreeMeek is still in production and will be released later this year.
