Leslie Jones blasts Sephora a day before the company’s diversity training

A day before Sephora closed for diversity training, Leslie Jones tweeted a complaint about their service.

What We Know:

  • On April 30, SZA tweeted about her negative experience at a Sephora in California. “Lmao Sandy Sephora location 614 Calabasas called security to make sure I wasn’t stealing. We had a long talk. U have a blessed day Sandy.” The following day, Sephora responded to SZA’s tweet and agreed that they would look into the situation.
  • In damage control mode, Sephora announced that they would closing all of the stores for one hour on June 5th so that all of their employees could attend a diversity training.
  • Unfortunately, on June 4th, another celebrity took to Twitter to expose Sephora. Actress/Comedian Leslie Jones tweeted about her issues with Sephora in New York. “I sent my makeup artist @LolasBeautyMark and my best friend’s wife to @Sephora 2103 Broadway store. She needed makeup and to learn how to apply. My makeup artist called in tears of how bad they treated her and my friend’s wife!! The salesperson and manager. SO NO MORE SEPHORA.”
  • The company reached out to Jones privately through Instagram regarding the situation. They also reached out to Lola Okanlowan, Jones’ makeup artist, to get more information on the incident.
  • The company also released a statement to the public about their stance on the subject. “It is our priority to build an inclusive community and a place where all clients feel respected. Our journey has not been perfect and by no means complete. We will continue to lean and work toward this goal.”
  • In an effort to show their support for diversity, Sephora launched the “We Belong to Something Beautiful” campaign prior to the June diversity training. The objective of the campaign is to “never stop building a community where diversity is expected, self-expression is honored, all are welcomed, and you are included”.

SZA and Jones’ openness about their experiences has encouraged to speak out about their bad experiences with the company.
