In a video released early Tuesday morning, Stacey Abrams announced that she will not run for Senate in 2020.

What We Know:
- Abrams gained national attention last year as she ran for Governor of Georgia. The race ended with a narrow defeat for Abrams, who would have been the first African American woman elected governor. After this loss, Abrams mentioned the idea of running for president.
- National Democrats wanted Abrams as their pick for the Senate race against one of Trump’s allies, Sen. David Perdue.
- In the video posted on her Twitter account, Abrams expressed her gratitude for the support and encouragement she has received. She also elaborated on her decision not to run for Senate by saying that it is not the best role for her. Later in the video, she stated her intentions on fighting voter suppression, an issue she believes cost her the gubernatorial election.
- Abrams vowed to make sure Georgia elects a Democrat to the U.S. Senate in 2020 and announced her upcoming initiatives to protect the right to vote.
- Former Columbus Mayor, Teresa Tomlinson said she would run for Senate only if Abrams did not, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Now that Abrams has confirmed she will not run, this is her chance.
It is unclear if Abrams will pursue presidency or run for governor again in the future, but she will continue her fight to restore democracy in America. “While I still don’t know exactly what’s next for me, here’s what I do know: Democracy in America is under attack,” Abrams said.
