It was announced in May that the sixth season of Power will be the last for the Starz series. However, the drama will continue in the “first of several” prequel series titled Power Book 2: Ghost, and will feature Mary J. Blige.
What We Know:
- The Grammy winner made the announcement with the series’ creator/co-showrunner Courtney Kemp and executive producer 50 Cent at the show’s Television Critics Association press tour on Friday, Variety reported. The series will “continue the journey” of some of the show’s “most controversial characters,” Kemp revealed.
- “This is probably the most exciting thing that’s going to happen to me this year,” Blige said at the event. “I’ve been a fan of Power since the very beginning and I want to thank Courtney Kemp and 50 Cent for starting this conversation with me.”
- 50 cent, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, said the singer came to mind when discussing a continuation of the show. “I said I got to find a replacement for me, we found somebody that Courtney’s gonna have a ball working with because it’s female orientated and somebody who’s got enough juice and grace to make the show even bigger,” Jackson said.
- Blige currently stars in The Umbrella Academy on Netflix. The double Oscar nominee signed a first-look TV deal with Lionsgate to develop and produce TV series for the studio via her production company, Blue Butterfly Productions.
The last season will consist of 15 episodes. The final season will be split into two parts starting Aug. 25. The show will premiere at Madison Square Garden five days before it debuts on Starz, with the last five episodes airing early 2020.
