The R&B singer R. Kelly will be moved from the Chicago jail where he is currently being held with no bail.
What We Know:
- At a hearing last week in Chicago, Kelly was ordered to be held without bond. He entered a not-guilty plea to 18 counts of serious sexual misconduct. The hearing was to determine whether he should be released from custody – and prosecutors argued that he should not be released.
- The New York charges state that Kelly recruited young girls for sexual abuse at his concerts all around the U.S. These charges are only part of the sexual misconduct allegations that have piled up against him this year, including him filming having sex with several underage girls for years.
- The New York hearing according to the Chicago Tribune will be held Aug. 2 then he will return to Chicago for a status hearing on Sept. 4 for a separate indictment.
- If he is convicted, he faces a maximum of 195 years in prison based solely on the Chicago charges.
- Kelly “has a unique ability to influence and intimidate witnesses and victims, and that continues to this day”, one assistant U.S. attorney told the judge, Harry Leinenweber, at Dirksen Federal Courthouse in Chicago last week.
He is going to jail. Period.
