WWJD: Kansas City Pastor Offers Apology After Calling Congregation ‘Broke & Busted’ For Not Gifting Him A Movado Watch

What in the “What Would Jesus Do” is going on? A Kansas City pastor has issued an apology after he went on a rampage during a Sunday sermon where he called his congregation “broke and busted” for not gifting him the Movado watch he requested. Hear his sermon and his apology inside…

It’s seemingly “pastors put on blast” season.

On the heels of the Kim Burrell controversy, a Kansas City pastor has found himself in the middle of of some mess after comments he made about his congregation during a recent Sunday service.

Carlton Funderburke, pastor of Church at the Well in Kansas City, was caught on video calling his congregation “poor, broke, busted, and disgusted” for not honoring him with a Movado watch, which ranges from $395 to $3,000+, that he asked for a year ago. Of course, that portion of his sermon he went viral after it was shared on TikTok.

“See that’s how I know you’re still poor, broke, busted, and disgusted because of how you’ve been honoring me,” he said during the sermon. “I’m not worth your McDonald’s money? I’m not worth your Red Lobster money? I ain’t worth your St. John Knits – y’all can’t afford it no how,” he continued.

“I ain’t worth your Louis Vuitton? I ain’t worth your Prada? I’m no worth your Gucci?,” he asked his congregation.

He went on:  “Ooh, you can buy a Movado at Sam’s [Club] and you know I asked for one last year. And here it is all the way in August and I still ain’t got it,” before adding: “Let me kick down the door and talk to my cheap sons and daughters.”

Audacity is what you just watched.

After receiving tons of backlash, Pastor Funderburke decided to issue an apology, saying the video clip “does not reflect my heart or my sentiment toward God’s people.”

In a video shared to the “Church at the Well” Facebook page, Pastor Funderburke read his apology from a script, telling watchers, “Therefore, I offer this sincere apology to you today. No context could erase the words I used. I apologize to all the people that have been hurt or angered or anyway damaged by my words,” he said in the video.

”For those who know and love me, thank you for your support,” he said. “For those who now know me because of this video clip, I regret that your first impression of me is one of anger, hate, and resentment.”

It’s odd that a pastor would ask his congregation – that he dubbed broke – for a watch in the first place. Isn’t he supposed to be a vessel for the Lord? Makes you wonder…

Gospel singer/pastor Juanita Bynum recently said Christians can NOT listen to secular music and consider themselves saved in a recent sermon. She’ll likely go viral next. Take a listen above. Do you agree or disagree?
