Charlamagne Tha God was hoping for a better ending for his old friend Wendy Williams.
When he was just starting out, the troubled host was already an established radio star and took him on as something of a protégé.
He went on to become one of the most influential figures on the airwaves. But he said he was saddened by the unfortunate end to her TV career earlier this year.
“I didn’t like the way [the “Wendy Williams Show”] ended because I don’t want to see her go out like that,” he said in a new interview with Extra.
“I want to see her go out healthy and on her own terms,” he said, likening Williams’ TV situation to “a basketball player or football player” who’s “one of the greatest of all time, but their career ends in injury.”
Charlamagne spoke to “Extra” ahead of the premiere of his rebooted late night Comedy Central show “Hell of a Week.”
Williams did not appear on the series finale of her beloved and long-running show, and was unable to host the final season due to Graves Disease and ongoing health issues.
Charlamagne said he “wants to see her get healthy, and get back in whatever position she chooses to be in… I want her to go out the way she deserves.”
Charlamagne also dished on his late night boss Stephen Colbert, who is the executive producer of his show. He said Colbert “added significant value” to his life and that he learns from “The Late Show” host “just from kicking it with him” and listening.
“He’s one of the best to ever do it, so if you got one of the best to ever do it in the late night space, executive producing your talk show, you’d be a fool not to just shut up and listen,” he said.
“He’s been around [late night] so much, he knows it all and is not afraid to share that information and it’s worked wonders for me,” he concluded.
