Man Drives Into Minneapolis Crowd, Killing Woman

A woman has died after being struck by a vehicle at a protest.

What We Know:

  • The vehicle drove into a crowd of people in Minneapolis during a protest. The protests were against the recent shooting of Black man Winston Smith. Minneapolis Police have issued a statement to Newsweek saying they were on duty monitoring the protest. It was then that they observed on camera a vehicle driving into a group of protesters.
  • The collision occurred at around 11:39 p.m on Sunday. One adult female was taken to the hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead as a result of her injuries. Two other protesters were hit as well and taken to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.
  • Video of the incident captures the moment the suspect was pulled out of the vehicle. Authorities say protesters were hitting the suspect while detaining them. The suspect is now in custody and being treated at a hospital. As of late, there has not been a motive determined the cause of the collision.
  • A police spokesperson mentions that drugs or alcohol may have been a contributing factor in the crash. The identity of the victim has not been released at this time. The medical examiner on the case will reveal her name and cause of death in the coming days. Homicide detectives are involved and working with the Minneapolis Police Department’s Traffic Investigative Unit.

Lately, there have been a number of protests in the city over the killing of Winston Smith, who U.S Marshals shot on June 3rd.
