According to a Las Cruces Police Department (LCPD) statement, Alvarado carried out much of his abuse in front of his toddler and two school-aged children.
What We Know:
- Alvarado initiated the violence on Thursday, April 22, around 8 p.m. That night, he battered, strangled, and suffocated his girlfriend twice with a pillow and a shirt. According to KRQE, Alvarado proceeded to take away her phone and made her be next to him all night so she would not alert authorities.
- The woman was secretly able to write a note asking for help. The next morning, Alvarado permitted her to take the children to the bus stop. There, she asked the children to hand the note to the bus driver. After receiving and reading the letter, the driver immediately called 911.
- LCPD was notified of the incident on April 23 at around 8 a.m. When officers arrived at the house, they found the woman with several cuts, bruises, and abrasions. In a report, police wrote her appearance was “consistent with her claims of physical abuse.”
- Later that day, authorities located Alvarado and arrested him. Police are charging the 40-year-old man with three third-degree felony counts for aggravated battery against a household member. These include two counts for suffocation of the victim and one for strangulation. In addition, Alvarado faces misdemeanor battery counts against a household member, as well as deprivation of property.
On Tuesday, Alvarado remained in jail without bond. Further, online court records did not list any attorney who might comment on his behalf.
