Video Shows Man Rescuing Child Who Fell Onto Train Tracks

A man is being called a hero after risking his life to save a child who fell onto train tracks while an oncoming train approached the station.

What We Know:

  • According to NBC News, Shri Mayur Shelke works as a pointsman at the Vangani train station in Mumbai, India. The employee sprung into action when a child slipped off the edge of the platform and onto the tracks below.
  • Security cameras at the station caught the entire incident, showing the child struggling to get back onto the platform while an unidentified person struggles to get a grip on the child in an effort to pull them to safety. Shelke sprints toward the child and throws them onto the platform seconds before a train rushes past them.
  • The video was released by the Ministry of Railways on India’s Twitter page, acknowledging Shelke’s good deed calling it an act of “exemplary courage & utmost devotion to the duty.”

  • The minister of railways, Piyush Goyal, announced that Shelke would be receiving a monetary reward of 50,000 rupees for his heroism and a celebration from the Ministry complete with a standing round of applause from their staff and an in-person congratulations from the Divisional Railway Manager.

Shri Mayur Shelke told reporters he plans to give the boy half of his well-earned prize stating, “I’ll give half of the amount, given to me as token of appreciation, for that child’s welfare & education. I came to know that his family isn’t financially strong. So I decided this.”
