On Monday, the Ugandan government announced that rapper-turned-entrepreneur Akon would soon be developing another futuristic city in Africa.
What We Know:
- According to Complex, the government has agreed to give Akon one square mile of land to create Akon City marking his second planned city on the continent. His first $6 billion city in his native country of Senegal is currently in the process of being built and is set to be completed by 2024.
- The business mogul aims to use his own cryptocurrency, known as Akoins, to operate the city. Although the cost of creating the new city has not been disclosed, Akon did comment on the country’s ability to fund the project.
“I know if I put it there, they’re going to find a way to afford it because it’s going to motivate them,” he stated.
- Akon’s second city is predicted to follow the construction of the first Akon City in Senegal, including a Hamptons Hospital campus, Hamptons Mall, its own school, police department, waste management services, and other amenities like parks, stadiums, and recreational facilities.
- He hopes the new cities will inspire new opportunities for residents and is willing to spare no expense. “We want all the latest in future technologies,” he stated. “I don’t want nothing from the old days. I want it all to be based on tomorrow’s technology and how it’s gonna be built for our future because all the latest technology now is all instruments and minerals, and resources taken from Africa. I’m already in Africa, so we can build everything within the African continent without having to outsource anything from the outside.”
The second city is set to launch in Uganda by the year 2036.
