What We Know:
- An unidentified suspect began shooting after an altercation between party-goers in the Park Manor neighborhood of Chicago at around 4:41a.m Sunday morning. The shooting left 15 people shot and two fatalities. Rayneesha Dotson and Lionel Darling were pronounced dead at the scene of the crime. According to reports, 4 guns were found at the scene of the shooting, and at this point, there isn’t a known motive.
- Seven of those that had been shot were taken to nearby hospitals by the paramedics, and the rest of the victims were taken by other parties. The victim’s ages range from 20 to 44 years old, and their conditions range from good to critical. Police Superintendent David Brown claims “detectives are really just getting started” n regards to the incident. This was the first of three shootings that took place in Chicago on Sunday.
- Later that day, an unrelated shooting occurred in the Chicago area where both a 13-year-old boy and a man, 20, were struck with bullets when someone opened fire. The teenager was struck in the knee while the older man was hit in the arm. Mayor Lori Lightfoot has reacted to the incident on Sunday, calling it “outrageous” in a series of now-deleted tweets.
- Another unrelated shooting took place on Sunday that resulted in a Chicago police sergeant being shot in the face in the 6th district. The man sustained a graze wound on his chin, and his identity has not been released. It remains unclear whether the sergeant was the intended target. The sergeant is in good condition and was released from the hospital later that evening. Superintendent Brown remarked, “It just highlights the dangers of policing in the current environment we’re in.”
At least 40 people were shot in Chicago last weekend, and authorities are actively working to figure out the cause of the incidents.
