The multi-faceted entertainer is reportedly leaving his current contract with Disney owned network FX after signing a new eight-figure deal with Amazon television.
What We Know:
- The Amazon deal includes a content channel that spotlight Glover’s work. His brother, Stephen Glover, has also penned a deal with Amazon as well. The Glover brothers have worked together before on Atlanta, which has won multiple Golden Globe and Emmy awards. The transition to Amazon will not impact the future of Atlanta as Glover’s FX contract requires two more seasons of the show. The next season’s production is set to begin next month, reportedly being filmed back-to-back with the next season.
- News of the new agreement arrives just days ahead of Glover’s announcement that he’s creating, starring, and executive producing an updated version of Mr. and Mrs. Smith. The show will co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge and is a re-imagining of the 2004 film of the same name. Glover and Bridge previously starred together in 2018’s Solo: A Star Wars Story. Mr. and Mrs. Smith is set to premiere on Amazon in 2022.
- A potential series entitled HIVE is suspected of being in development, with Malia Obama being involved in the process. There aren’t too many details as of now, but Obama has previously worked on HBO’s Girls as an intern in 2015. Obama is a student at Harvard University and also worked as a production assistant on CBS’s Extant, which featured Halle Berry.
- Barack and Michelle Obama have also recently penned a multi-year deal of their own with Netflix in 2018. The deal involves the Obamas creating shows of their own which include a cooking show entitled Waffles + Mochi and a comedy called The G Word. The G Word will be part-documentary and part-sketch comedy with a premise designed to invoke audiences to ask if the word “Government” is deviant or not.
- “We hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between people’s, and help them share their stories with the entire world,” Barack Obama said in a statement about the Netflix deal.
It appears as though Donald Glover isn’t retiring anytime soon as news continues to break regarding future plans for his career.
