NBA legend and Hornets owner Michael Jordan is giving back to his community by creating access to new health care services.
What We Know:
- According to an announcement from the regional health care provider Novant Health, residents in Wilmington, North Carolina will be receiving two new medical clinics in an effort to provide affordable and accessible care. The new facilities have been opened up via a $10 million donation from Michael Jordan.
- Jordan, who has partnered with Novant Health to open two other Michael Jordan Family Medical Clinics in Charlotte, North Carolina, launched the clinics to provide essential services to patients that are uninsured or underinsured. Their services include primary care, social and behavioral services, and administering over 1,000 COVID vaccines.
- Jordan responded to Novant Health’s announcement in a statement:
“I am very proud to once again partner with Novant Health to expand the Family Clinic model to bring better access to critical medical services in my hometown. Everyone should have access to quality health care, no matter where they live, or whether or not they have insurance. Wilmington holds a special place in my heart and it’s truly gratifying to be able to give back to the community that supported me throughout my life.”
- Before becoming a Basketball Hall of Fame athlete, Jordan grew up in Wilmington and went on to play basketball for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After being drafted as a professional athlete, Jordan played 15 seasons in the NBA and won six championships with the Chicago Bulls.
Jordan has now donated a total of $17 million to the Novant Health Foundation and remains dedicated to challenging the equity gaps in medical care.
