Al Sharpton Files for Divorce After 17 Years of Separation from Wife

American civil rights activist and Baptist minister, Alfred Charles Sharpton, has filed for divorce from his estranged wife.

What We Know:

  • According to court documents, the 66-year-old former Democratic presidential candidate filed for a contested divorce in Manhattan Supreme Court on Thursday. Al has been married to Kathy Jordan Sharpton for 17 years. The two have been living separately since 2004.
  • The Daily Mail reports that the couple met back in the 1970s when Al was touring with James Brown and Kathy was a back-up singer for the group. About ten years later, the couple became married and remained together for 24 years before their split. Sharpton and Jordan share two daughters named Ashley and Dominique.
  • Since 2013, Al Sharpton has been linked to his 42-year-old Aisha McShaw. McShaw is a celebrity personal stylist and designer who debuted a made-to-order collection for New York Fashion Week back in 2017. The pair was first publicly pictured together in July of 2013 at the New York County Democratic Committee Award Ceremony, where McShaw told guests she was his ‘girlfriend.’
  • Al Sharpton is most known for founding the civil rights organization called the National Action Network. He also ran for president back in 2004 as the Democratic nominee. The reverend maintains his political influence by hosting MSNBC’s Politics Nation.

As of late, it is unclear if Kath or Al will be seeking spousal support or how their estate will be split up.
