Rep. Jim Clyburn (D-SC) claims that the Capitol riots were an inside job, on the basis that rioters knew where his unmarked Majority Whip Office was located.
What We Know:
- According to TMZ, the FBI believes that the rioters who breached the U.S. Capitol last week may have been assisted by employees of the building in navigating specific offices. Rep. Clyburn, whose office was broken into despite not having a nameplate or indicator that the office belonged to him, uses this as evidence to support that insiders coordinated the attacks.
- On CNN’s State Of The Union, Clyburn states, “I’m saying that I have an unmarked office that you gotta know exactly where it is. It is where I spend most of my time doing my work as the Majority Whip.”
- “That office is where I do most of my work, and for some reason, these people showed up at that office, but the office where my name is above the door, on the door, and my position above the door was not disturbed. I’m just saying. They didn’t go to where my name was, they went to where I usually hang out, so that to me suggests that something untoward was going on.”
- Prior evidence suggesting the attacks were coordinated stems from the suspicious way rioters zeroed in on Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s office. According to the FBI, it’s virtually impossible to find “in the maze,” yet the rioters were able to breach her office within 11 minutes.
- The FBI is now speculating involvement from Capitol police and other Capitol staff, who authorities are now investigating via cell phone data, especially the phones of the hundreds of officers who were off duty. They aim to see if they were in the building at the time of the riot.
It has previously been reported that the FBI is suspicious about the attack being premeditated since the Capitol had been closed off the public since March, which would make navigating the building and finding key offices extremely difficult.
