Rescue services saved a 4-year-old boy late Wednesday from a 44-foot deep well in Texas.
What We Know:
- The boy fell into the 44 foot while with his parents. Deputies responded to the incident around 5 p.m. The rescue finished around 2 a.m.
- In a tweet by the official City of Mission Texas Twitter account, the caption revealed the width of the pit that was “only 8-10 inches in diameter.” Because of the hole’s size, rescuers had to dig next to it, posing a risk of the rocks collapsing. Luckily, the rescue was completed safely. According to Inside Edition, “Any vibration, any wrong strike of a shovel, could cause more soil to fall into the hole where the victim was at,” assistant Mission Fire Chief Robert Alvarez said.
- The City of Mission Texas shared a video on Facebook when the boy was retrieved from the well. The video shows the boy attached to a harness being pulled to safety as bystanders applaud in relief.
- The Starr County Sheriff’s Office reported that after the rescue, the boy was “alert and talking” and was airlifted to a nearby hospital. The page later shared a statement from Starr County Sheriff Rene Orta Fuentes. “Last night proved to be a testament of our community and neighboring communities’ unity and sincere concern for each other. Through prayers and actions from everyone involved, a little boy lives today”.
- Alvarez believed the mission was only successful because of everyone who pitched in, commenting, “What was key in the successful outcome of this too, was that everybody pitched in—everybody,” said the chief. “You saw a sheriff’s officer with a shovel helping us move soil…whatever needed to be done.”
The child is in stable condition and is currently at a hospital in Edinburg, being monitored and receiving X-Rays.
