Pharaoh’s Conclave (PCX) received $100K from Google for Startups “Black Founders Fund”. In an effort to turn this year back onto a positive note, Google created a $5 million for the Black Founders Fund aimed to help startup Black businesses. The company recently announced who will benefit from the generous grants.

What We Know:

  • One company chosen was Pharaoh’s Conclave, founded by Jakita and Erich Thomas. It is a group established to create career pathways for unrepresented groups such as the Black and Latino communities in eSports. The Atlanta-based organization is just one of over 70 recipients across the country selected by Google to provide resources up to $100,000.
  • The eSports industry has seen an explosion of popularity and relevance in the past couple of years. Gaming has become one of the more popular hobbies to get into with casual players and enthusiasts alike, regardless of age. As the competitive scene rises, so will its impact on the economy. According to BusinessInsider, the eSports market is on track to surpass $1.5B by 2023.
  • The Black Founders Fund is only the latest in financial support for the black community from the tech giant. Jewel Burks Solomon, Head of Google for Startups in the US, noted Google’s $175 million commitment over the summer towards economic opportunities for Black business owners.
  • Google has said that less than one percent of venture capital is going to Black businesses in the country, which explains why they felt the need to step in and give a helping hand. Their grant towards PCX has already reportedly allowed the company to expand the number of jobs available in their organization. The funds have also helped them promote their messages and reach their target audiences. Their main focus is on the youth and helping them develop critical skills that will help them in their careers.

  • Erich added that Pharaoh’s Conclave is named after their first-born son. “His name is Pharaoh and so we named the company after him with the thought of creating generational wealth and opportunity for our children to be able to go into whatever they wanted to do.”
  • To show how dedicated Erich is, he is determined to expand his success in order to build the foundation for businesses apart from their own. Aside from PCX, he is also involved with Morris Brown College, where he’s used money out of his own pocket to help create an eSports program.

Aside from the traditional means of measuring success from the initiative, Google is hopeful that the money it puts out will help these unrepresented businesses will go further than just the ones elected. The sole goal of the Black Founders Fund is to give companies the chance to achieve the success they wouldn’t have had otherwise without this financial boost.
