Disney announced Tuesday that the live-action remake of “Mulan” will be available on Disney+ for an additional fee of $29.99.
What We Know:
- “Mulan” was originally set to be released March 27, but was delayed several times due to COVID-19. It was most recently slated to come out on August 21, but Disney removed the theatrical release date altogether at the end of July. The film will now be available to Disney+ subscribers starting September 4. The Disney+ streaming service is an initial subscription of $6.99 a month and customers will have to pay an additional $29.99 to rent the film. Disney will premiere “Mulan” in theaters in markets where they are open and where Disney+ is not available.
- The pandemic has hurt the entertainment and movie theater industries greatly. Disney’s third-quarter losses amount to nearly $5 billion. Movie theaters have had to close their doors indefinitely during the pandemic lockdowns. Although businesses are slowly reopening throughout the country, the state of the virus still makes it unclear when it will be fully safe to return to the cinema.
- The 2020 remake of “Mulan” follows the same tale as the 1998 classic of a Chinese woman disguising herself as a man to fight in the war. The film trades in Disney’s Renaissance animation for beautiful sets and epic action scenes. Disney filmed “Mulan” on a whopping $200 million budget. Directed by Niki Caro, the film stars Liu Yifei in the titular role and acting heavyweight Tzi Ma from “The Farewell” and “Arrival.” Like “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Mulan” will be one of the only big-budget Hollywood movies to feature an entirely Asian cast.
Several other highly-anticipated films have been delayed or pulled from the theatrical release calendar. Marvel’s “Black Widow,” also a Disney production, was originally set for May but has been delayed until November. Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” was also scheduled to be a summer blockbuster and is now delayed until September.
